Description:This is a fairly literal rendering of the Hebrew. Folks don't like wording as familiar as the King James Version of Psalm 23 to be monkeyed with, but the advantage is that you think of the Psalm's meaning more deeply.

Description:This is the only Psalm I've set to music so far that had two very distinct renditions. The original rendition repeated the beginning musical theme at verse 7. When an RBCS class began learning it, they noted the monotony at that point. I had to agree. I rewrote the section of verses 7-9, which is the version on this recording.

Description:One Psalm is a whole composition. Setting a verse or several verses to music is certainly useful, but they are each intended as a whole unit, beginning to end.

Description:Setting a Psalm to music is, at its best, a musical exposition of the words. The music should help us understand the words, then help us express the words, and finally to help the rightly-felt words imprint on our souls.

Description:Dig those Chris Taylor background vocals (or bgv's- their cool, insider professional name)! The only question is: Why isn't he doing the foreground vocals (or fgv's, as I'm now dubbing them)?

Description:"Selah" is considered by most scholars to be a musical instruction. As part of Scripture, it is obviously not limited to the time-period in which it was written. Modern musical options include a key or tempo change, or a musical interlude, which is what I usually do.

Description:The musical setting of a Psalm must function as a servant to the words. Semantic paragraphs have to translate into musical 'paragraphs', etc.

Description:Singer: Darla Lyon (previously introduced in Psalm 66).I heard the "Jews for Jesus" perform at Covenant College back in 1977 and said, "I need to put a Psalm to that style of music." So here it is.

Description:We are given general instructions to memorize God's words (Josh 1:8; Ps 119:11)/ We are given more specific instructions to memorize Psalms. Eph 5:19 "speaking to yourselves in Psalms ...singing ...in your heart..." It doesn't say "Read to each other." We can only speak what's been memorized, here assumed to be by song.

Description:This recording dedicated to Pastor Michael Schneider of Trinity Presbyterian of Valparaiso. This Psalm music was put to music for the occasion of our churches' joint revival services many years ago. He preached on the dry bones, from Ezekiel. He has been an indispensible mentor and friend.

Description:It's work to memorize Psalms. In choir in high school, we learned the songs- music and words- by constant repetition. I don't think there's any other way to do it.

Description:I translate the Hebrew name of God transliterated Y-H-W-H as either Yahweh, Jehovah, or Lord, which all have good reasoning behind them. There are hard decisions to be made here, for some consider it disrespectful to pronounce Y-H-W-H aloud.
Music sheet at Psalm Music Sheet
9/6/00
Description:Singer: Sarah Clifton. She also sings Psalm 46.Here Y-H-W-H is 'translated' into 'New Testament-ese', "The Father, the Son, and the Spirit" in one place. This is the only such kind of liberty I've taken, reasoning that those names for Yahweh were not known as such until the NT.

Description:'Translating' Y-H-W-H into 'New Testament-ese', "The Father, the Son, and the Spirit" in Psalm 96 might seem to set a precedent for 'updating' other doctrines in the Psalms. But I don't consider God's name itself to be a doctrine, so I don't see or follow such a precedent. But I also agree that this 'update' can be justifiably criticized.
